A Marathon Effort for Wai Ariki

Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa was a proud sponsor of the Rotorua Marathon this month, encouraging its own team to take part in one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s oldest sporting events.

Seven staff members from across the business entered a range of distances, with most participating for the first time.

Wai Ariki Spa Attendant Orban Waitaiki Messenger completed the 21km half marathon in his first-ever marathon event.

“I was motivated to get back into exercise,” said Orban. “Since having my son, I’d stopped being physically active, so entering helped me get moving again. Given I absolutely hate running, I knew it would be a huge challenge.”

As a wellbeing-led organisation grounded in mātauranga Māori, Wai Ariki recognises the importance of staff health and wellbeing. It offers a range of wellness experiences that support manuhiri (guests) across their taha tinana (physical), hinengaro (mental), and wairua (spiritual) wellbeing.

Connor Rogers, Guest Experience Officer, said the experience sparked a new commitment to running and fitness.

“The event completely changed my mindset. After completing the 21km, I’ve caught the marathon bug and now I’m keen to sign up for a longer distance. Soaking in the geothermal mineral waters afterwards was also the perfect way to unwind and soothe my tired body after the run,” he said.

For Guest Experience Officer Ahurei Morgan, the marathon was as much a mental challenge as it was physical.

“I ran the 21km for my mental health and wellbeing,” she said. “I wanted to prove that I’m stronger than anything that goes on in my mind. Crossing the finish line was overwhelming, knowing I can say I’ve completed a half marathon.”

As first-time sponsors of the Rotorua Marathon, Wai Ariki was incredibly proud to support New Zealand’s oldest marathon event and celebrate the achievements of its team and the wider running community.
