Meet Akatu Marsters, connecting people, culture and wellbeing at Wai Ariki
Akatu Marsters joined us in March 2024, bringing her rich heritage and diverse experience to Wai Ariki. Of NZ Māori and Cook Island descent, Akatu grew up in Whakarewarewa Village, Rotorua, where cultural sharing and hospitality were deeply embedded in daily life.
This strong cultural foundation led her to a career in tourism, including a role in Aitutaki, Cook Islands, and 14 years in the health sector. In 2021, she returned to tourism as a Business Manager for a local Māori operator and now proudly works with Ngāti Whakaue, contributing to the development of Wai Ariki, a wellness centre rooted in Māori culture.
Starting as a Duty Manager and Cultural Advisor, Akatu is now excited to step into her new role as Guest Experience Manager. She remains deeply involved in managing the country’s first Māori Cultural Wellness Spa, a challenge she’s eager to embrace. Proud to be part of a business that honours the culture of her people, she is committed to ensuring an authentic and meaningful experience for all.
“Having worked in several sectors, I always come back to the belief that it’s all about the people — He tangata, he tangata, he tangata (It’s all about the people). Knowing you’re doing the right thing for everyone involved is what makes a job worthwhile. But when barriers like system delays or approvals get in the way, that can be a challenging part of the role.”
Akatu is passionate about family and helping future generations thrive.
“I hope to see our people thrive in all that they do. I see myself as being able to help our people, our whānau (family), hapū (sub-tribes), and iwi (tribes) where I am able. It’s all about the future generations.”
“My grandson, my only grandchild, is the joy of our whānau’s life, it’s another level of love. Family and relationships are so important and I’m all about building strong connections with loved ones and creating a supportive, nurturing environment.
“Giving back to the community, volunteering or supporting causes that aim to improve the lives of others is also something I hold dear,” Akatu concluded.
Akatu’s passion for culture, community and connection continues to shape her journey, with a deep commitment to honouring and sharing the rich traditions of her people. We’re lucky to have her as part of our team, bringing her knowledge, warmth and experience to Wai Ariki.
