Aquaman returns! Jason Momoa named honorary citizen of Rotorua at Wai Ariki
Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa is proud to have hosted Jason Momoa during his visit to Rotorua, where he was officially named an Honorary Citizen of the city. The announcement was made in a special ceremony at Wai Ariki, with Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell joining Jason on stage to share the exciting news with the crowd at his band’s Öof Tatatá concert.
Jason’s return to Rotorua was a momentous occasion and General Manager at Wai Ariki Debbie Robertson explained how the team was thrilled to welcome him back.
“Being part of Rotorua’s beating heart and providing a world-class, award-winning venue that supports tourism, community and guest outcomes is central to all we do at Wai Ariki.
“As a place deeply rooted in Ngāti Whakaue heritage, Wai Ariki is committed to offering a space for relaxation and cultural connection and we love sharing this with manuhiri (guests) who share our passion for Māori culture. It was wonderful to see Jason embrace that during his visit.”
Mayor Tania Tapsell shared, “I was honoured to be invited on stage with Jason and his band Öof Tatatá to open the show with our exciting news. The crowd went wild upon hearing the announcement and it’s clear our people are thrilled to welcome him as an Honorary Citizen of our community.”
Mayor Tapsell also took a moment to thank Debbie and the team at Wai Ariki, saying, “A big thank you to the team at Wai Ariki for hosting our special guests and ensuring they experience the manaakitanga (hospitality) that Rotorua is so well known for.”
Debbie shared, “Being a part of this special moment with Jason and seeing Rotorua’s recognition on the world stage is a reminder of the importance of honouring our heritage and the relationships we build with visitors.
